My name is Daniel Orubo, and I have an innate need to create. (My earliest memory of this is compulsively hand-drawing a 40-page Power Rangers comic at only 11; I wanted all the Rangers to be Nigerian like me.) Because of this need, I have worn many hats over the years: writer, editor, producer, director, designer, the list goes on. But for the sake of my career, I like to say that I am a content strategist and tech marketer who is obsessed with creating (and helping others create) quality content — be it a blog post, a report, a landing page, a video, or even a push notification. I have worked across Africa’s digital media and technology sector, turning my lifelong passion for content creation and storytelling into a dynamic tech marketing career.

My interest in the tech industry began in 2014 during a stint as a journalist at Techpoint Africa, where I reported on the continent’s rising tech innovators. I would later go on to lead content teams as Editor-in-Chief at two renowned digital youth publications, Zikoko and Konbini, creating viral quizzes, articles and videos across topics of love, money and pop culture. For my work at Zikoko, I was dubbed the “single-handed force behind the new wave of relatable content…in Nigeria.” Then, in 2021, after I had had my fill of digital media, I officially transitioned into tech, ideating and executing content marketing strategies for multiple startups.

I am currently the Head of Content & Content Strategy at PiggyVest, Africa’s leading savings and investment platform with over 4.7 million users. Hired in 2021 to build the company’s content department from scratch, I have had a blast managing my exceptional team. Together, we established the PiggyVest blog, using engaging finance content and SEO strategies to triple the website’s organic search traffic in a year. We’ve also executed other successful marketing initiatives, including Nigeria’s first comprehensive savings report, a viral webcomic series, and a money newsletter with an open rate well above the industry average.

Beyond my work at PiggyVest, I have created and executed content strategies for multiple B2B and B2C SaaS companies, including Pocket, Patronize, Eden, Splice and Backdrop.

Working in tech has changed my life (yes, the pay is great, but so is the creative freedom), and I wanted to help other creators find their footing in the industry. That’s why I co-founded ConTech Africa ConTech Africa, a non-profit community for African creators in tech. The community, which currently has over 5,000 registered members, was launched in November 2022. Since then, we have led several donor-funded initiatives, including awarding full scholarships to over 200 low-income members, hosting webinars with leading tech experts, and organising boot camps and learning challenges.

I am also passionate about queer advocacy and representation. In recognition of my advocacy work, I was a 2020 nominee for The Future Awards Africa Prize for Leading Conversation — the most important award for outstanding young Africans, according to Forbes. And in more personal creative pursuits, I directed Hanky Panky, a queer animated short that made it to the semifinals of the New York Animation Film Awards for ‘Best Film.’ I also produced and served as the Editor-in-Chief of Feel Good, an acclaimed anthology of short stories celebrating queer joy.

Whether for a business or a personal project, I am constantly feeding that innate need to create high-quality content that excites my audience. I promise to bring that same enthusiasm to whatever content job you might be considering me for (the one that made you read all this). Since you already got this far, shoot me an email and let’s create something great.
